What Is BOTOX®?

BOTOX® is the proprietary name for Botulinum toxins, one of the most poisonous biological substances on earth. However, the cosmetic development of this substance, which is synthesized from the microbe that causes botulism (a type of food poisoning), is safe when created under strict laboratory protocols and administered by a trained professional.

It’s intended to temporarily prevent a muscle from contracting and is delivered through a medical injection into different parts of the face and neck to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It’s also a scientifically-backed treatment for migraine headaches and some types of depression and anxiety.

These injections use a toxin called onabotulinumtoxinA to temporarily prevent a muscle from contracting. While this was the first development of the botulism toxin for cosmetic use, further advances in this substance now include abobotulinumtoxin A (Dysport), rimabotulinumtoxin B (Myobloc), and incobotulinumtoxin A (Xeomin). Each is a little different, particularly when it comes to dosage units, so they aren’t interchangeable.

Every person is different, and the amount of the product for each injection will vary depending on the goals of the procedure or the treatment regimen. Your clinician will go over your procedure and set realistic goals, as well as what to expect for aftercare.

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute Study

In 2016, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute performed an extensive study on Botox, conducted in response to concerns from some in the medical community about the potential of botulinum toxins to move along the initial injection site down the neural pathway to spread to other parts of the face, body, or central nervous system.

While the study did note the movement of the toxins in a closed lab setting, researchers sought to further look for ways to curb the toxin’s ability to spread. Determining the extent of the spread of the toxin was inconclusive, especially as the amounts injected for cosmetic purposes are minuscule. However, it’s important to many users to have the product remain only in the appropriate injection site.

The medical research team found that a version of Clostridium bacteria, genetically engineered from its natural state, could block the spread of Botox injections, which will allow the drug to remain only in the injected areas. Therefore, improving the localization of the injections and limiting the spread, the results from each procedure can be both safer for all applications and, for those using it solely for cosmetic purposes, placed with even better precision.

Health Conditions Treatable

While it is best known as an injectable for cosmetic purposes, the drug is also used to treat several other medical conditions, most notably migraines. It’s also demonstrated success for other types of minor medical issues. If you have neck spasms, excessive sweating, overactive bladder, or lazy eye, you may wish to have a professional consultation with a medical clinic that uses it as a health treatment or to speak with your primary care provider about your options.

Using BOTOX® to Treat Migraines

In 2010, the FDA approved the use of Botox injections to reduce the severity and duration of migraine headaches. With proper administration and consistent use, it can prevent headaches before they start. The process involves precision injections near the nerve endings and pain transmitters that contribute to migraines, thereby blocking the release of the chemicals involved in the pain pathways and gradually reducing the symptoms and frequency of migraines.

It’s important to note, however, that every person is unique and that the results from these treatments for migraines may take up to 6 months to fully become effective.

Is Botox Safe?

This is probably the most common question that patients ask about these treatments. The FDA has issued warnings about potential side effects, although when administered by a trained professional, these side effects are often minimal.

What Can I Expect From my Procedure?

When you’re using the injectable for cosmetic purposes, most people find it most effective when treating fine to medium lines and wrinkles. Deeper lines and wrinkles, including sagging jowls, may be better treated by a more intense procedure.

Does It hurt?

The product is injected with a small needle and may feel a little painful, although most clients feel that their Botox isn’t any more painful than a routine flu shot.

What is recovery like?

Recovery is fairly quick, and while some people may experience a little pain and swelling, other people may be able to resume normal activity immediately after the injections. Over time, recovery may be faster and less intense.

How often should I have treatments to maintain results?

Most medical professionals recommend having injections every three to four months, although your specific frequency will vary according to the results you desire and whether you’re using it for cosmetic procedures or medical treatment.
